Adidas finally unwrapped its latest technological innovation in running, the Adidas Ultra Boost. The 65 year old German company calls it the ‘best running shoe ever made’. I can hardly disagree with them on this aspect.

Specifications:

Heel height: 30.5mm

Toe height: 20.5mm

Heel to toe drop: 10mm

Primeknit upper is what caught my eye first. Primeknit is a seamless one piece upper that provides a great fit and unmatched stretch qualities. A carefully engineered mesh keeps your foot locked in place and provides superior ventilation in various weather conditions. It feels significantly different from last year’s model. It is a lot more flexible than last year’s model. The upper offers 4-way flexibility. The Ultra Boost are so well matched to your feet. Primeknit feels like a soft knit material to touch and flexes accordingly. It remains tight in the sides where one needs support and is flexes at the widest point of the foot to help maintain balance.

Adidas claims that it redesigned the heel to offer better Achilles support. The external heel counter is a thing of beauty, it ties into the midfoot to secure the fit. It provides increased levels of stability and offers frictionless freedom to the Achilles tendon. Plastic wedge provided in the midsole improves stability for heel strikers. There is also a ‘dual-density torsion system.’ It allows the heel to be supported independently while the forefoot moves independently. Leaving the science behind, it does a great job in improving the comfort.

Most running shoes use EVA for their soles, Adidas used thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) in its Ultra Boost. These rice-like pieces are crammed together to create a sole that offers energy return from the impact of running, effectively pushing you forward. It feels like walking on clouds when you first put them on. It is the best foam cushion available in running shoes right now. It is responsive, durable, protective and most of all consistent. Around 3000 of these rice-like particles make the midsole (20% more than any shoe till date). They act like 3000 tiny soft pillows. The Ultra Boost midsole is more temperature resistant, providing a consistent performance in different weather conditions.

Adidas changed the outsole as well. Runners strike the ground in different ways, hence the new stretch web outsole has an elastic design and moves in virtually any direction. The toe is angled upwards and helps for better shoe roll while some runners may find this uncomfortable.

The shoe feels smooth and effortless. The rocker toe and the torsion system make your next step as easy as your first. It provides plenty of bounce with even more cushion (Adidas simply nailed the technology this time). The Ultra Boost just gets better with every release. If the need of the hour is a neutral, well fitting, responsive shoe. Adidas Ultra Boost is your best choice.

The shoe was launched on February 11, 2015 worldwide and was released in India in early March. It is available at Adidas outlets for a price of 17,999 INR.

Bottom-line: ‘Best run ever.’
