The 33 collection from Asics gets a revamp with three new models in 2015. The 33-M, 33-FA and the 33 DFA. We shall review the 33-DFA now. Anyone wondering about the name, the 33 joints in our foot form the cypher (getting it right?). Asics claims that this shoe series allows the most natural movement between all the joints in out foot. We are not sure if these shoes are actually doing this but we sure can say one thing regarding these shoes. These are very comfortable shoes (this is what matters the most at the end). The 33-DFA is set to replace the Gel-Lyte33. Continue reading to find out if that is a good thing.

Specifications:

Heel height: 14mm

Toe height: 10mm

Heel-to-toe drop: 4mm

Looking into the upper, we find a seamless mesh upper. The comfort levels are amazing. The upper is highly breathable, a great thing for all those long distance runs and people with sweaty feet. It also features ComforDry material. This provides unmatched levels of moisture management. The seamless upper makes sure that there is no irritation due to friction whatsoever. That again is a good thing (lots of good things so far). It fails to deliver when providing a secure lockdown (there goes those good things). There just is not enough support in the midfoot area to provide a secure lockdown. Naturally, the stability of the shoe could be better. It also does not feature an internal heel counter. In defense of the absence of an internal heel counter, Asics is trying to keep this shoe to the basics of a minimalist shoe. Everyone who loves to feel the ground will rejoice with this shoe, thanks to its 4mm heel-toe-drop. The toe box is roomy and is comfortable; Asics calls this as Natural33 Last. An important thing to notice is that the shoe runs short on size, so be careful while picking these up from the store.

Asics changes the midsole as well and this is a lot softer than your traditional midsole materials. It is even softer than SpEVA and Asics calls this material as Solyte. In fact, this truly is so light. Not only this, Asics introduces Amplifoam into 33-DFA. The Amplifoam provides unparalleled levels of comfort, flexibility and durability (Amplifoam – this is your all-in-one package right here). This makes sure that you do not have to worry about ground feel during your runs, a common problem with most of the minimalist shoes.

DFA, what is this? Deep FluidAxis (33-FA is FluidAxis). Naturally, the FluidAxis runs much deeper with these shoes when compared with 33-FA. What does the FluidAxis do? This innovative construction makes sure that the flex grooves aligns properly with the joints of your foot thus enabling better adaptability. In simpler words, it enables better movement between your foot joints making your runs stress-free (at least for most of the time.)

This shoe is great for your daily workouts. Saying that, this shoe should pose no problems as long as you have short workouts. You feel uncomfortable after long workouts, not our fault, we did warn you.

A size 9 men’s shoe weighs 247g and the 33-DFA retails at around 6,000-7,000 INR. It is available on select online retailers and major sports retailers.

Bottom-line: A true successor to Gel-Lyte33.
