Hyderabad Triathlon gets the pulse racing in Hyderabad

Participants at the starting line of the event

The Hyderabad Triathlon held in Hyderabad, Andhra Pradesh, yesterday saw people from different walks of life take to the streets for the ultimate endurance event.

There were athletes from the Andhra Pradesh Police as well as other athletes from Hyderabad and the rest of the country that congregated together at the famous Gachibowli Stadium on Sunday for the fourth Hyderabad Triathlon organised by the Great Hyderabad Adventure Club (GHAC).

The triathlon had four categories in total – Novice, Sprint, Olympic and Half-Iron. As the name suggests, the Half-Iron was the toughest of the events featuring longer distances in all three individual events (1.9 km swim, 90 km cycling, 12.1 km running)

Additional DG, Sports, Rajiv Trivedi, from the A.P. Police was one of the notable high-profile names to feature at the event.

Trivedi has formerly competed in the triathlon event at the Olympics which consisted of a 1.5 km swim, a 40 km cycle ride and a 10 km run.

Apart from Trivedi, there were many other notable national athletes such as Madhuriya Borah, Richard McDowell and Sunil Menon, who took part in the event.

Two above-the-knee amputees, Aditya Mehta and Srinivasa Naidu along with a below-the-knee amputee, Kiran Kanojia, took part in a special Para Triathlon Olympic Relay meant for physically challenged athletes. Mehta cycled, Kanojia ran and Naidu swam to complete the sequence.

Diyanat Ali, founding director of GHAC, said that the event had grown in popularity and had become nationally relevant with more and more participation from across the country.

“It is India’s biggest open Triathlon event, and we had more than 150 participants from across the country, a good indication of the event’s popularity,” he said.

Deepam Moraparia, director of the event, said that the Triathlon had no winners and losers, instead serving as a platform to test the participants’ endurance.

“There were 100 spot registrations which reflected the growing awareness about health and fitness among the public.

“The next Hyderabad Triathlon will have full iron-level and preferably in an open lake for swimming,” he said.
