Sportskeeda is proud to present a brand new series – ‘CXOs on the run’. In this series, we converse with industry leaders, entrepreneurs and other high-profile personalities for whom running is a way of life, and how they manage to find time to pursue doing what they love the most.

Along with being the director of Contours- a women only fitness chain in India, Chandra Gopalan is also an accomplished runner. In our chat with her, the former regional manager of Swiss air talks about the marathons she has participated in, and her love for running in general. Excerpts below:

How and when did you first start running?

I started running in early 2004. I met a group of marathon runners with whom I started training.

Which was the first marathon you participated in?

My first marathon was the 21 km Bangalore Lipton Marathon in May 2005. I was surprised at the ease with which I did the run. It was poorly managed amidst traffic, yet it was an enjoyable experience.

How do you go about preparing for a marathon?

I train three months before a marathon, starting with 30 kms and going up to 50 kms as the marathon draws closer. I do my interval trainings, long runs and tempo runs.

Do you follow a diet in preparation of a marathon?

I don’t make any particular diet changes before a marathon. I do try to take in additional carbohydrates three days prior to a marathon.

What kind of kit do you use for running?

I use Brooks shoes and Nike tees and tights. Additionally, I use Enerzal, an energy drink, and salt pills to avoid dehydration.

Q9: How often have you participated in the TCS 10k run?

I have participated in the TCS 10k three times now.

What are the other runs you participate in?

I have participated the Mumbai Full Marathon, the Ultra marathon in Bangalore and the Auroville full marathon. Also, I recently did the Melbourne full marathon.

What other sport do you play or follow?

I follow all sports including football, tennis, cricket and badminton.

Who is your favourite sportsman?

Sachin Tendulkar is my favourite sportsman.

Do you have any message for our readers who wish to start running?

Running is amazing. All you need is a pair of shoes and courage in your feet . Enjoy it.
