The 'Wettest place on Earth' joins the marathon bandwagon

The second edition of Cherrapunjee Marathon is going to be held on 17th July 2015, coinciding with the death anniversary of U Tirot Sing Syiem, a prominent freedom fighter from the Khasi hills.

Although nearby Mawsynram currently holds the Guinness World record for being “the wettest place on Earth”, Cherrapunji still holds the all-time record for the most rainfall in a calendar month and in a year.

The picturesque landscapes of Meghalaya promises to make this marathon one of the most scenic marathons in the country. The Shillong-Cherrapunjee route will gift the runners, rich hill running experience with a touch of nature. Runners will run through clouds, pass by tumbling waterfalls, mist covered lush greenery, tranquil ambiance of villages and many interesting sights along the way.

The categories in the marathon include Elite Indian Professional Race (full marathon of 42.2km and half marathon of 21.1km), Amateur Race (full marathon of 42.2km and half marathon of 21.1km), Kid’s Fun Run of 2km and an Inclusive Run, open to all including persons with different abilities.

Claimed by the organisers to be the first “timed marathon” in Northeast India, the second edition of Cherrapunjee Marathon is gearing up to attract runners from across the country. It is surely a rising star in the marathon tourism circuit of the country.
