Inca Trail Marathon:

inca trail marathon

This 25-mile marathon runs through the Andes Mountains of Peru across a 500 year-old Inca trail from Aguas Calientes to the lost city of Machu Picchu.

According to runner Jenny Hadfield, it is not just the countless number of stone steps that the marathoners have to contend with, it is also the several changing ecosystem that they pass through right from desert-like condition to dense jungle to rainforests to mountains.

There is also an elevation gain of 10000 feet!

Hadfield says that this race not only drains you physically but also mentally because one wrong step could send you tumbling down the mountain. Every year 40-50 racers take part in this marathon.
