Commonwealth Games 2014: Pistol Shooting - Rahi Sarnobat wins gold, Anisa Sayyed silver

Indian shooters continued to impress on the third day of the XX Commonwealth Games as, after Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul, Rahi Sarnobat and Anisa Sayyed, too, grabbed the gold and silver medals respectively in women’s 25m pistol event.

Rahi, who won the silver medal in Delhi Games four years ago, started off very well in the semi-finals, scoring 16 points to qualify for the gold medal match along with compatriot and 2010 CWG gold medalist Anisa Saeed, who shot 14 points.

Rahi, a 23-year-old shooter from Kolhapur, finished 9th in the precision round and 3rd in the rapid fire round.

Gold medal match was a totally one-sided affair, with Rahi totally dominating the game from start to easily win the gold by a scoreline of 8-2. Australia’s Lalita Yauhleuskaya won the bronze medal after defeating Malaysia’s Azahari by 10-8.

With these medals, Indian shooters have now won 7 medals in these games . Yesterday, Abhinav Bindra won the gold in men’s 10m Air Rifle and Malaika Goel won the silver in women’s 10m Air Pistol.

Today, Prakash Nanjappa won the silver in men’s 10m Pistol event, while young Indian shooters Apurvi Chandela and Ayonika Paul won the gold and silver medals respectively in women’s 10m Air Rifle event.

Indian medal tally has now gone up to 16 medals, which includes 5 golds, 7 silvers and 4 bronze. English team, with a total of 36 medals (14G + 11S + 11B), are holding the top spot, whereas Australia, with 13 golds,11 silvers and 15 bronze, are at the second position.
