Commonwealth Games 2018: Why there was no shoot-off for bronze-medallist Ankur Mittal

Ankur Mittal had to remain satisfied with bronze

The Indian shooting contingent's medal rush at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games continued on Wednesday as Om Mitharwal, Shreyasi Singh and Ankur Mittal bagged a medal in each of the three medal events.

While Mitharwal started off the day with a bronze in Men's 50m pistol, Shreyasi bagged the gold in Women's Double Trap. Mittal, despite leading for the most part in the final of Men's Double Trap, had to be content with bronze.

Interestingly, at the end of the eliminator to decide the bronze-medallist both Mittal and Tim Kneale of Isle of Man finished with the same score. It was a very exciting battle as both Mittal and Kneale went toe to toe in the eliminator. Mittal, who was leading up until about 5-10 rounds before that, shot 53 out of 60. Kneale, as well, finished with a score of 53/60.

However, it was Mittal who was eliminated, despite the scores being tied. Why?

Because earlier in the day, in the qualifiers, Mittal had finished behind Kneale. In the qualifiers, David McMath had finished on pole position with India's Mohammad Ashab finishing 2nd. Kneale had finished 3rd while Mittal came fourth.

In case of a tie in the eliminator, the shooter who finished below in the qualifier gets eliminated. Thus, due to an average show in the qualifier, Mittal had to remain satisfied with a bronze.

Meanwhile, Mohammed Asab, the other Indian shooter in the six-man finals - who had the bronze medal in Glasgow four years ago - finished in the fourth position.

Scotland's McMath went on to claim the gold medal with a new Games record of 74.
