Indian shooter Gurpreet Singh misses Olympic quota berth

Gupreet Singh had finished 4th in the qualification stage

India’s Gurpreet Singh missed an Olympic quota berth by the skin of his teeth on Saturday, after finishing 4th in the finals of the 25m Rapid Fire Pistol Men event at the ISSF Rifle and Pistol World Cup in Munich.

Barring Christian Reitz of Germany, who maintained a sizeable lead over the rest for a large duration of the finals, it was a close contest between Gurpreet and Alexei Klimov at the start and the duo were joined by Keith Sanderson of United States of America.

Eventually, it would be a shoot off between the three shooters that would decide who would join Reitz on the podium and unfortunately, for the Indian he fell short, finishing with a total of 19 as compared to Klimov’s 22, who clinched the bronze and Sanderson’s 26, who won silver. Reitz, though, won gold with a score of 32.

Gurpreet had finished 4th in the qualification stage in a total of 76 shooters with a score of 581 but despite putting in a good fight, couldn't bring his A-game out in the shoot off. The fourth place finish also means that he failed to seal an Olympic quota spot for the Rio Games next year as well.
