Jitu Rai qualifies for 2016 Rio Olympics with a silver at the World Championships

Granada (Spain), Sep 9 (IANS) Indian shooter Jitu Rai won the silver medal in the men's 50m pistol event at the World Championships here Tuesday and booked a berth for the 2016 Rio Olympics. Jitu shot a total of 191.1 to fetch the silver while the gold went to South Korean Jin Jongh (192.3) in a tight finish.

Chinese shooter Pang Wei (172.6) settled for the bronze. Hoang Xuan Vinh finished fourth to bag the last Olympic berth on offer.

Jitu becomes the first Indian shooter to qualify for the Rio Olympics. Jitu had recently won the gold medal at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and is ranked 5th in the world.

"Its an extremely proud moment for us to see Jitu Rai become the first Indian athlete in all Olympic events to qualify for the Rio Olympics. We were all very confident about the way Jitu has been shooting and he has repaid our faith in an emphatic manner. We hope that this is the beginning of many more such successes in the coming days," said Raninder Singh, the president of the National Rifle Association of India (NRAI).

Commonwealth Games silver medalist Gurpal Singh shot 550/600 to end up in 33rd place, while Om Prakash shot 548/600 to finish in 38th place in the 50m pistol event.
