Rio Olympics 2016, Shooting India: Heena Sidhu, Women’s 25m pistol preview, date, timing and where to watch

Can Heena Sidhu prove her mettle with a victory today?

The women’s 25m pistol event is a unique event in itself. It is fairly different from the men’s variant of the 25m rapid fire pistol event. The women’s event is the only event in shooting which will be taking place today i.e on the fourth day of the Olympic Games in Rio.

The event will see each woman shooter allowed to shoot 60 targets which are divided into two subcategories – 30 Precision Stage shots and 30 Rapid Fire stage shots. In the Precision Stage, six sets of 5 shots are fired within a timeframe of 5 minutes. Whereas in the latter, a green light turns on for 3 seconds giving a short time slot for each candidate to get her shot.

Indians participating:

Heena Sidhu: The Indian is currently ranked 26th in the world in the 25m pistol event but could be one of the hottest prospects when the event gets underway later today. The 26-year-old shooter could not produce a marvellous performance in the 10m air pistol event the other day, but her niche could be the 25m event.

Heena Sidhu has only recently started to participate in this event of shooting. Her results in the two events she’s taken part in 2016 have not been extraordinary as she finished 42nd and 8th in the ISSF World Cups held in Rio De Janeiro and Baku respectively. However, India’s medal hopes in the women’s shooting depend on only her and the shooter might give the fans a reason to rejoice.

Shooters to watch out for:

Olena Kostevych (Ukraine): Olena Kostevych did not do well in her 10m air pistol event early on in Rio as she finished 28th. However, she won the bronze medal in the same event at the 2012 London Olympics and should be looking to better her record in what could be her last Olympic Games. The 31-year-old is currently ranked number three in the world and will be one of the favourites to qualify for the final round.

Jingjing Zhang (China): The 28-year-old Chinese shooter comes into the 25m pistol event on the back of some outstanding victories in the same event at the ISSF World Cups in the past couple of years. The shooter has won a total of four gold medals, one silver medal and two bronze medals in these two years. Therefore, consistency has been the key for Zhang and all we can say is watch-out for the Chinese.

Maria Grozdeva (Bulgaria): The 44-year-old Bulgarian is one of the most successful female shooters to have ever graced the sport. She will be participating in her seventh Olympic Games in Rio and could surprise everyone as she chases glory. She has already won the gold medal twice at the Olympics, a third would make her the stand-out female Olympian of all time as she also has three bronze medals to her name. You’re never too old to be at the Games.
