Rio Olympics 2016: Women's trap preview, date, timing and where to watch

Slovakia’s Zuzana Stefecekova will be aiming for gold at the women’s trap event

Women’s trap is one of three shooting events which will be taking place today at the National Shooting Range in Rio. The women’s trap is one of the five shotgun events which are included at the Olympic Games and will be featuring 21 shooters from around the world. In the women’s trap event, an individual shooter is supposed to hit clay targets using a shotgun where the targets are thrown from a trap located under them as they shoot from five different positions.

The contestant must move from one station to the next after the athlete ahead of them has finished taking their shot. The shooter is to shoot 75 targets which are divided into three rounds of 25 targets each.

Shooters to watch out for:

Satu Makela-Nummela (Finland): The 46-year old trap shooter conquered the world of shooting when she won the gold medal in the same event at the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.

But after having to face eight years without any major medals, the shooter has finally made her way back to the top with a well-deserved gold medal victory in Baku at the ISSF World Cup in 2016. Her number 2 ranking in the world indicates that she will be one of the key shooters at Rio later in the evening.

Emma Elizabeth Cox (Australia): The young Australian has been in fine form in the last couple of years and won gold medals at the Oceanic Championships held in 2013 in Sydney and also at the ISSF World Cup in San Marino earlier this year. The 24-year old Australian could be a tough opponent to beat tonight for her competitors.

Zuzana Stefecekova (Slovakia): The experienced trap shooter bagged the silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics and has since managed to win a gold medal at the ISSF World Cup Finals in Gabala in 2014, silver medal at the ISSF World Cup Finals in Nicosia in 2015, gold medals at the ISSF World Cup in Almaty in 2014 and in Granada in 2013. Along with international titles, Stefecekova has also won two consecutive European Championships gold medal in Maribor 2015 and in Lonato 2016.
