Women's 10m Air Rifle to kick start shooting at Rio 2016

Sanjeev Rajput was the last Indian shooter to book a quota in the Rifle 3 Position event

The shooting schedule for the 2016 Rio Olympics in August was released on Monday. A discipline whose qualification dates will end this month, it will be a nine-day event starting on the 6th of August with the Women’s 10m Air Rifle and Men’s 10m Air Pistol event and end on the 14th of August, with the 50m Rifle 3 Position event.

India perhaps will have the best ever contingent representing them in the sport, having booked 12 quotas but more importantly, they seem to have got the balance just about right. With 6 Rifle quotas, 4 Pistol quotas, 1 trap and 1 skeet quota, the team certainly look very competent.

Add to the fact, it is a good combination of those who have been there and done and those who are yet to reach the pinnacle makes it an even more interesting. Joining proven performers like Abhinav Bindra, Gagan Narang will be the likes of Jitu Rai, Apurvi Chandela, Gurpreet Singh- each of whom, would hopefully be featuring in their maiden Summer Olympics, and so it really would be intriguing to see who would travel to Brazil in the respective categories.

For the time being, the preparations are on in full swing with several shooters presently in Shillong, gearing up for the South Asian Games while some are abroad training on their own.
