10 best Arcade games

Before the PC games, Xbox games and PlayStation games were released and actually became a trend, we all went to the arcade to game! We asked our parents for the money, took a few of our friends, and off we went, to play at the Arcade. All of us would fight over which Player we should be, which games we should play, and most importantly, which games were the best in the arcade. Well, here’s a list of the 10 best arcade games, in no particular order.

#10 The Lost World : Jurassic Park

How cool is it to sit in a jeep, made entirely for you and your enjoyment, and go around the park, and shoot dinos on the lose? Awesome right? I’m sure a lot of us actually want this to happen in reality, of course, not to such a large extent (I hope). The credit goes to Sega, and Sega alone. Thank you for bringing this game to us, Sega, in the same year that the movie was released.

#9 Operation Wolf

It is rumoured that the inspiration for this game actually came from Rambo. This game kick started the shooting arcade games, with REAL guns. With the ability to kill enemies after enemies with a variety of guns to chose from, it isn’t tough to identify why the game was a success. A special mention goes to all the enemies that were killed, with their blood smeared across the trees and jungle floors, without whom, this game wouldn’t have been as successful as it is.

#8 Golden Axe

When fighter games started taking the limelight, Golden Axe was created. This is a game where 2 players are able to play. They fight ech other with swords, and whoever dies first, loses (of course). This game was extremely popular with young boys, due to the lack of clothes on the characters, as well as the advanced gameplay. Not to forget to mention the absurd and insane enemies, these are the aspects that made this game.

#7 NBA Jam

The real winner with this game was the fact that they had the lisence to use the actual names of teams and their players. The gameplay was beyond comparison, and the rules of the game weren’t like the rules of basketball in reality. In fact, the rules are so limited, that the game is more action-packed than several action games! And of course, how can we forget the amazing lines like “He’s on fire!” This is where the line came from, in case anyone was wondering.

#6 Street Fighter II

An advanced sequel to the first Street Fighter, this game was an added breath of fresh air. It is quite difficult to establish a competitive gameplay with an arcade game, but this game did it and has left its mark in history. This game is not at all mainstream for the era that it was released in, the era being one of shooting games.

#5 Pac-Man

This game has got to be THE most recognised game of all time. It broke the norm of having space games all around you. This game came as something brand new and, without a doubt, completely original. This game is as simple as running away from the bad guys (the ghosts) and getting as many points as possible from the treasures and usual points! This game became a hit and extremely addictive, before you could even say Pac-Man.

#4 Asteroids

A much more innovative and futuristic game when compared to Space Invaders, Asteroids took inspiration from the game Space War. Now, what exactly is the differece between these games? In Asteroids, the player has to dodge dangers from all parts and facets of the game, PLUS there are missile-firing spaceships that attack the player. Not to forget, that in this game, the player has to fire at asteroids (hence the name, if no one got that).

#3 Donkey Kong

One of the very first arcade games to be launched, it was an instant winner with the players. This game was way ahead of it’s time, thanks to its modern gameplay and its inclusion of four screens. Who would have ever thought to make a gorilla the main charatcer of a game? Fun fact! Donkey Kong actually featured Mario for the first time. Also, his name wasn’t Mario when Donkey Kong first released. It was Jumpman! Let’s see you get your head around that one.

#2 Ms. Pac-Man

The first ever female character to be portrayed in a game, and what a sellout it was! The infamous ghosts were made to move arbitrarily, so as to put the players out of the systematic gameplay. Every level has something new, and it takes longer to finish it. What majorly attracted players to this game, was it’s unbeatable 256th level. But after several efforts, the players realised that this really was unbeatable. But of course, they still played it, with all the love in the world, just to experience a female character, as well as 4 new mazes.

#1 Space Invaders

As soon as Space Invaders was launched, it was an immediate success. People jumped at the opportunity to play this game. Upon it’s launch and success in Japan, the creators got it lisenced for the US. How do we know how successful the game was? Well, the revenue gained by Space Invaders was higher than that of Star Wars (the highest grossing film of all time). But what exactly was it that made people jump at this game? Was it because of shooting aliens? Yes. Was it because of the laser cannon? HELL YES. All in all, a memorable arcade game.
