10 historical periods that should be made into games

I must admit it, writing about this is going to be really hard as almost every historical period can be converted into a mind-blowing game. Such is the beauty of the history of our world. However, I must choose the best. I am sure that our readers will have different views about this list, but I hope you will agree to some of the historical periods mentioned here. We have all played games like Age of Empires, Mafia, Civilization and Total War Rome. These games were based on different historical periods. So, here is the list of the historical periods that should be made into games.

#10 Viking Age

A good way to start this list would be to give a spot to the ruthless, proud Vikings. This age extended from 793 AD to 1066 AD in European history. The Vikings would crush anyone who came in their parts.

If a game were to be made about this age, I would say a hack and slash game would be perfect. The Vikings were strong and preferred war to peace. So, a game where the player is a Viking general and he is presented with a challenge, he must lead his troops to victory while slashing through any opponent who dare oppose him.

An opportunity to build Scandanavia! What do you say?

#9 The Mayan Civilization

The Mayan civilization is one of the oldest civilizations dating back to about 500 BC. Developing a game around this famed civilization is perfect given that the Mayans have everything starting from culture to advanced combat techniques. So, we can expect a complete strategy game where the player would be free to explore and conquer all of South America while building famous monuments like the El Castillo at Chichen Itza.

The Mayans had strong disciplined warriors who trained all day long. Well, trained all day long, I suppose we can have a mini-game or two here?

So, are you up for the challenge? Will you build a civilization that will never be defeated or will you fail the test of time and lose everything on December 21, 2012?

#8 American Civil War

The American Civil War was a war fought between the South and the North. The war started in the year 1861 and went on for four years. If a game is made then i suppose it would be good to make a real-time strategy game.

Players from all over the world could choose sides and battle it out with their own small armies. Sending in spies to stay up to date with the enemy’s plans would be an integral part of the game and this job would be taken up by those players who are brave enough to sacrifice themselves so that their team wins.

#7 Napoleonic Era

Now, who has not heard of Napolean Bonaparte? Napoleon was a born leader who was able to conquer France and a major part of Europe. He did make a bad decision when he decided to march to Moscow and capture it but, what if this were a part of a game?

Would you be happy ruling over France or would you rather expand your kingdom? Would you perish in the battle of Waterloo like Napoleon or would you go on to become the greatest ruler the world has ever know?

#6 Mongol Empire

This list would be a fake, if I had not decided to put the Mongol Empire into it. This empire , which existed during the 13th and 14th centuries, was the largest contiguous land empire in history. It extended from Japan to Arabia! Imagine this epic historical time period in transformed into a game!

I am sure it would be one of the best strategy games ever made as players will be able to build the entire Mongolian Empire and fight innumerable battles against enemies who wish to put an end to the rule of the Mongols.

#5 British Raj

The British ruled over India for almost 100 years! During this time they helped the country grow and they harmed it too. A game revolving around the British Raj would be fun as players will be able to play as either the British or the Indian freedom fighters.

If players choose to be British they will be able to strategize their next move in order to help develop colonial India. However, if gamers wish to play as the Indian freedom fighters, well I assume it would be somewhat like Assassin’s Creed in India, do you not agree?

#4 The Dark Ages

This period refers to that time when the mighty Roman Empire finally met its end. The Dark Ages was marked by cultural and economic deterioration that hit Western Europe. A game around this age, let us all say that the Roman Empire is dying and Western Europe needs a hero.

A hero who will save what once was the proud Roman Empire, a hero who would see that the empire is able to sustain itself and does not run into the grounds. I do not know about you, but I strongly feel that this period could be turned into a RPG or a strategy game or better, a mix of both!

#3 World War I

No point going on and one about this historical event that began on 28 July 1914 and lasted until 11 November 1918. A war between the biggest countries would make an amazing game.

Players would be able to choose sides, make allies out of different countries, send spies to the enemy nation and ultimately fight it out to decide who in the best in the world. It does sounds really good and I hope this historical war is converted into a game real soon.

#2 Mughal Empire

The rule of the Mughals has been one of the longest in world history. The Mughals invaded and started to rule over India during the early 16th century and have helped mould India into a beautiful country. This time period saw the rise of many great kings like Akbar, Shan Jahan and Aurangzeb.

Many battles were fought in order to gain control over most of India. If moulded into a game, the players would be able to see what it was like during the time of the Mughals, they would be able to rule and conquer India like the Mughals did.

#1 Feudal Era of Japan

I am sure that most of us have come across the famous TV show, ‘Samurai Jack’ during our childhood. I do not know about you, but I personally love the style of the samurai. The discipline, the grit and the desire to kill in order to maintain law and order.

Let us picture the scenario where this age gets morphed into a game. You would be among your king’s trusted few, the elite group of fighter, the Samurai. You would be able to protect the nation with the ‘Katana’ by your side.

Maybe unlockables in the form of advanced body armour to protect yourself in combat? Seeing this era being transformed into a game would be a nice change of pace given that we have not seen many games that are based on Japanese history.
