Shayak

Games have always been a platform to put up thoughts and imagination. It is the platform where one can put his own imagination and turn it into a fantasy, and present it infront of the world as a source of entertainment. But nowadays, there's been a lack of innovation in the gaming world. While recent technologies are making larger and larger leaps and bounds, the noticeable effects have been diminished.

#7 Total Distortion

Video may have killed the radio star, but Total Distortion helped. As an inter-dimensional music video producer in this PC adventure game, you'll teleport your personal media tower into the Distortion Dimension to search for killer footage.

There, you'll duel Charlie Daniels-style with Guitar Warriors hellbent on protecting their dimension's intellectual property rights and haggle with predatory media moguls to make a sale, all while listening to lewd radio spots. What really made Total Distortion ahead of its time were the portable music video files that players could create inside the game.

#6 Perfect Dark

Perfect Dark was a game released for consoles in the year of 2000. Most of the people compared the game with Golden Eye, but this game stands apart. The game featured many new elements, which the modern era first person shooter games have adopted.

The game was the first to introduce the multiple firing modes for weapons, and feature reload animations on their weapons. Also, the game allowed for all manner of customization, from completely unique weapon sets to bots of various difficulties and behavior styles.

#5 The House of the Dead

This game ranks amongst one of the most played and cult horror game in the world. The game is played from a first-person perspective. The game was released on PS, Windows and Nintendo. Till date, it gives me chills down my spine.

In the game, you are to save your colleague who gets trapped inside the House of the Dead, and you have to fight your way throught the dead to rescure your friend. The elements featured in the game like the intensifying environment and the spine chilling atmosphere was the first time which any game offered at that time.

#4 Shenmue

The game was among the first ones to feature an open world gameplay and give the players freedom of movement and their actions. The game was considered similar to the GTA series, but didn’t receive much attention.

The game featured day and night cycles, stimulating weather effects and the non-linear storyline. The game is also responsible for the introduction of the quick time event (QTE), love it or hate it. QTEs have since invaded almost every genre you can think of. Many wanted to see more from the series, but production ended after the second game.

#3 Thief

This game marked the entry of the master thief in the gaming world, master thief Garret. The game was released in the late 90’s, and also after the MGS, but still some of the gameplay mecahnisms employed in this game are currently used in major AAA games.

Elements like staying in the dark and being quiet as much as possible, these were brought by “Thief”. We can agree to the fact that Solid Snake is a legendary mercenary, but Garret knows how to be invisible. These were concepts widely echoed in games likeSplinter Cell, later Metal Gear games, and Dishonored.

#2 Fahrenheit

This game was critically appraised at the time of its release for its interactive action drama genre. The game was published by Atari and was released for PS2 and Xbox, but later on the game was eventually released for Microsoft Windows and iOS.

The most interesting part of the game was its story. The game was based on a series of murders which takes place in the New York city which leaves the people shocked and traumatized. The game’s cinematics and the dialogue sections were done by motion capturing the artists, the same technique which was later adopted by the Rockstart studios for “LA Noire”.

#1 Metal Gear Solid

The first MGS released in the 90’s and it was one of the games which was critically appraised by the critics and the audience, for which it continued to become a saga. The game dealt with the ways of tactical espionage and covert military operations.

The most noticeable thing about the game was “Solid Snake”. He is one of the most influential characters in the gaming universe and creator Hideo Kojima left no effort on making look the rough and tough miltary person. MGS is one of a kind game and deserves to be on top of the list.
