Ranking the best Assassin's Creed games

The Assassin's Creed franchise tells the story about the Assassins Order, Brotherhood and their enemies, the Templars. These two sides have been at war for many centuries that started from Third Crusade to Renaissance to French Revolution and now to Victorian England, which is under development. The Assassins believe in total freedom for people, however, the Templars believe that true peace is achieved by establishing order."Nothing is true, Everything is permitted" - this is the code and guiding philosophy of the Assassin Order, upheld from the High Middle Ages until the modern era. It restricted unnecessary slaughter of innocents, preserved the reputation of oneself and of the Order, and was meant to create peace, not only within the world, but within the individual. In all these Assassin Creed games, you are not directly playing as the assassins of that era, you take control of their descendants, who are using a machine called the Animus to connect to the genetic memories of your ancestors, the original assassins. But the Animus was created by Abstergo Industries, who are the modern face of templars. With the help of Animus, you can start from the footsteps of your ancestor and re-live their journey as a true assassin. Ubisoft has released eight main storyline games and various spin-offs till now for this series. Based on the main series, we have rated here the best assassins creed games.

#8 Assassins Creed III

The final game of Desmond, Assassins Creed III, jumps from Ezio's era to the American Revolution. The player controls a half-English, half-Native American Connor Kenway or also known as Ratonhnhake: ton, in the fight against his father, Colonial Templar Grand Master Haytham Kenway.

AC III takes place on the Eastern United States: New York, Boston, the Wilderness, and the Eastern Seaboard. This is the first game in the series which allows you to parkour on trees and the first to add a nautical sailing system.

However, the game was universally hated by many fans because of the plot points, which don’t follow from one another, long gameplay, and mostly the important moments seem to zip right by without any time to pause or reflect.

#7 Assassins Creed: Revelations

The final chapter of Ezio Auditore, Assassins Creed Revelations, features an old Ezio, who travels to Constantinopole in search of five Masyaf keys to unlock Altair’s library. By te time the game released, gamers were tired of Ezio and the gameplay mechanics.

Revelations brought some new features like, new Hookblade tool for getting around the city, bomb-making system, and a tower-defense mini game, where the assassins defend the tower they captured from the templars.

Part of the game involves Ezio delving into the memories of Altair at the end of his life, and features a fitting end to Ezio’s life as an assassin.

#6 Assassins Creed: Rogue

Assassins Creed Rogue is the sequel to the hit game, Assassins Creed: Black Flag. The game is set during the Seven years war across various locations in North America and features a new assassin Shay, as the game’s protagnoist.

Haytham Kenway and Adewale from the Black Flag make appearences in the game alongwith Achilles Davenport from Assassins Creed III. Rogue fills the gap in the story between AC III and Black Flag as well as connecting to recently released Unity.

Gameplay in Rogue is identical to that of Black Flag with a mixture of ship-based naval exploration and land-based exploration.

#5 Assassins Creed

The first game in the long running franchise, Assassins Creed, takes place in the Holy Lands, Jerusalem, Acre and Damascus during the Third Crusade. The players take the role of legendary assassin Altair ibn-La’Ahad, who screws up a mission and gets demoted.

To regain his honour, Altair is tasked with killing nine Templars. The game is lower in this list because of one flaw, the lack of different sidequests to choose from, where it felt like you were literally doing the same things over and over.

This game established Assassin's Creed's distinctive look: the white hood and the gauntlet with the Hidden Blade. The game was praised for its smooth platforming, intriguing “assassins versus templars” story spanning thousands of years, and the hidden-blade assassination techniques.

#4 Assassins Creed: Unity

Assassins Creed Unity, is the successor to Assassins Creed IV: Black Flag with ties to Assassins Creed Rogue. The game is set within Paris during the French Revolution, and features assassin Arno Dorian, in his efforts to expose the true powers behind the Revolution. This game introduces revamped combat, parkour, stealth system and co-operative online multiplayer to this series.

Unity garnered praises for its visual upgradesand multiplayer-oriented format, but the criticism were mainly targeted to its weak storyline, unrefined gameplay, and numerous graphics issues upon release.

Because of this numerous bugs, Ubisoft issued an apology to fans and offered a free digital copy of one of several recent Ubisoft games. They also announced that the game's first DLC would be made available for free.

#3 Assassins Creed: Brotherhood

Ubisoft released the perfect sequel for the hit Assassins Creed II in the form of Assassins Creed: Brotherhood. This game picks up from where AC II ends, bringing Ezio to Rome in his ongoing quest to get his revenge on the Borgia family.

Ezio rebuilds the local Brotherhood in and around the Rome, with the help of an assassin Niccolo Machiavelli. The major part of the game requires you to attack Borgia towers to free areas of the city from Borgia influence.

The game was followed by a sequel, Revelations, which ends the story of Ezio and Altair, and is the third and final chapter of the Ezio Trilogy.

#2 Assassins Creed II

Probably the first game to offer a longer campaign story than any other game in this whole franchise, Assassin Creed II, is the first chapter of Ezio’s trilogy. This game takes place in Italy during the height of the Renaissance and the players take control of Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young boy who wants to take revenge for his family’s death.

The players can explore Florence, Venice, Tuscany, and Forli in Ezio's quest for revenge against the Templar-backed Borgias.

This game also introduces the great Leonardo da Vinci, who helps out Ezio in his quest by desiging him weapons from scrolls. AC II is more dynamic than its predecessor; you'll spend far more time on the move as opposed to waiting patiently.

Desmond's story is picked up here as he escapes from Abstergo and meets up with the modern day version of the Assassin Order.

#1 Assassins Creed IV : Black Flag
