Skyrim: 10 Things you might have missed

Here, we will take a look at 10 things you might have missed in the game, Skyrim. Touted as one of the most popular RPG games in terms of storyline, Skyrim is the fifth installment of the Elder Scrolls franchise developed by Bethesda Game Studios. The plot of the game revolves around the players efforts to destroy the menacing dragon, Alduin, who has been predicted to eat the whole world and, hence, destroy it altogether. Getting various plaudits like the PC Game of the Year by IGNand GamespotsReaders Choice Award in 2011, this game has enthralled many and yet, contains some elements which might have been missed by gamers. Lets take a look at some of them.

#10 Hail the Spartans!

As the title suggests, this reference is to the much-acclaimed movie 300 and the gamer comes across this phenomenon after quite a bit of searching on the west of Karthwasten and halfway up the mountain.

Here, there will be a dead sabre-toothed tiger between the cliffs but for the more adventurous one, theres a living tiger amongst the mountains who has a gruesome, fed up body that resembles King Leonidas in front of him. A surreal sight indeed!

#9 Snow White and The Seven Dwarves: The Dark Side

The epic fairy tail of Snow White and The Seven Dwarves has been enlivened to a certain extent in the game as we see seven beds in the darkness of the Black Reach. In addition to this, there’s a much larger bed at the end of the place which relates to the bed that Snow White slept on. Hence, the reference is complete but still boggling due to the dark aquar-esque surroundings that it is set in.

#8 The LOTR reference

Many would be aware of what a magnanimous following this movie has achieved over the recent past – an influence which has been no less in the gaming undustry, as Skyrim puts forward the dialogues “How many have you killed” and “ I have been counting” which will be spoken either by Hadvar or Ralof, according to where the gamer’s allegiances lie. These dialogues were the exact ones spoken in conversation between Gimli and Legolas while they ward off their enemies in the final battle in the second and the third installment of the popular franchise.

Another thing noteworthy in this aspect is the famous “My precious” phrase made popular by Gollum’s character and which has also been used in the game as one travels to Moira to seek the ring from her, to which she replies with this statement before doing battle with the player’s character.

#7 The Lannisters

Movies and Tv shows have become synonymous with games in recent times and this game is no different as it bears a striking resemblance to one of TV’s most downloaded torrents in recent times – The Game Of Thrones.

Touted as a cultural phenom amongst the TV faithful, GOT has brought about a striking revolution amongst the masses, which easily showed in the game with the dialogue “A Silver-Blood always pays its debts” spoken by Thonar Silver-Blood after he removes his family ring and gives it to the gamer as a token od respect for surviving the deadly Cidhna mine. This is the same dialogue spoken by the much famous Tyron Lannister in the TV show.

#6 The Enthir dialogue

As we talk about references to other entertainment franchises in the game, there lies another to the Oscar-winning movie “The Shawshank Redemption”. We came to this conclusion after there’s a dialogue option for a conversation with the character Enthir in the Winterfold college when the player’s character is trying to procure specific items to help him on his quest. Incidentally, it’s the same dialogue spoken by Tim Robbins in Shawshank.

#5 The Kolb and The Dragon Book

As the gamer starts off with his/her expedition down the cliff, there is an option where he/she can indulge in some literature and scroll through a library of titles. This option may be ignored by some beginners but the people who have achieved a certain mastery may feel the need to use it in the middle of fighting a dragon.

The studio is so enthralled into detailing the game that they have encompassed the whole story of The Kolb – a sad story with just one remotely positive ending.

#4 The Headless Horseman

Harry Potter afficionados would relate to this character as being a visually staunch side-character in the second installment of the much popular franchise. This has been taken by Bethesda into this franchise too, as gamers might feel that it’s just one of those surreal things that you come across while fulfilling your mission.

Although, as it happens with many mysterious things, some people do feel like “exploring the unknown” in such circumstances but can’t do so as there are no dialogue options for these horsemene and, therefore, they can’t direct you to the gravesite where they are headed to – a gravesite where the gamer can get an unimaginable loot!

#3 The Excalibur Sword

Talking about further references to history, the Excalibur sword made famous by Lord Arthur is presented to the player by an underwater mistress when he/she travels northeast of Bleakwind Basin.

Gamers stand mistaken if they consider this a glitch as its plain to see for everyone in the game. The sword can be acquired with the gamer’s easter eggs but if he/she has a signature weapon already, this sword can’t travel with the gamer.

#2 The Star Trek woman

The people working in Bethesda studios are supposedly a bunch of nerds which has been solidifed by the fact that along with the Minecraft inclusion, discussed later, they also included an inspiration of the famous movie franchise Star Trek in the form of a woman named “Temba Wide-Arm”, whom you will come across in your journey to Ivarstead’s Inn.

This name originates from an incident in an episode from Star Trek: The Next Generation, where ancient aliens lewdly entertain their audiences with a story about “Temba” with her arms open wide.

#1 The Mt. Everest pickaxe

There’s a real-life story of how two climbers, George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, went missing on their Everest expedition in 1921. While Irvine’s body was found in the subsequent years, there’s still no sign of Mallory and the only thing that could definte their journey together is an axe which is stuck in the side of the mountain. Skyrim uses this story in its plot with the Notch pickaxe is stuck at the top of the Throat of the World mountain. This is also a reference to the creator of the legendary gaming franchise Minecraft, Marcus ‘Notch’ Pearson, who brought to fore the involvement of the axe into plots like these.
