The Avalanche are under a lot of pressure as the reigning champions to come out strong this season. Their title defense started well, as they beat the Chicago Blackhawks (5-2) in their opener before they lost 5-3 at the Calgary Flames.

They bounced back to beat the Minnesota Wild 6-3. Their overtime loss (4-3) in Game 4 to the Winnipeg Jets was followed by another (3-2) against Seattle Kraken at home. Colorado then won back-to-back games, maintaining the pressure on the Dallas Stars.

New Jersey, meanwhile, had a terrible season last time, ending seventh in the Metropolitan Division with an overall record of 27-46. However, their start this season has been much better despite dropping their opening two games. New Jersey won three straight games before losing 6-3 to the Washington Capitals. They returned to winning ways against the Detroit Red Wings 6-2, in their last outing.
