Citius, Altius, Fortius refers to Faster, Higher, Stronger in Latin. Most of you will know that this is the motto of the Olympic Games. When I say of the Olympics, I speak of it as a representative of sport in large – for Olympics were born out of the most ancient traditions in Sport. Olympics retain the idea of the Sportsman spirit in its creed which says
“The most important thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but to take part, just as the most important thing in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The essential thing is not to have conquered but to have fought well.”
In spite of all the positivity that we fans embrace in the world of sport today, a caution does ring in our ears when we read the creed. Are these words relevant in the world of sport today?
In the blinding limelight of money, power and commercialization of sport, our sole and lone aim has become victory. Not necessarily in sport but victory over money and all the moolah. Enough has been said about the IPL and we will not take that any further.
Participation has died in India. Our kids have no access to sporting facilities except for cricket and a few other sports. Sport is a culture that teaches an attitude of redemption, of bettering one’s own potential and of respecting one’s opponent.
Every now and then we become aware of instances of racial slur in Football, cheating is commonplace. In our own country, cricket has become synonymous with mudslinging. After every defeat the media juggernauts the private lives of our cricketers and cuts a sorry figure.
The FIFA World Cup 2010 theme song celebrates the spirit of Sport that looks at sport as a celebration of life and a means to freedom. The context of the song can be seen in South Africa’s young hitory as an unbiased nation. In the little time that it has had it has come up with great goods, and has come to be recognized as a sporting superpower. The lines “When I will older, I will be stronger” signify that message.
