Anand keeps lead as the fifth game ends in a draw

The fifth game of the World Chess Championship 2010 ended in a draw enabling Vishwanathan Anand to retain his lead over the challenger Veselin Topalov.

Anand who was playing with black pieces for the third time in the game started with the basics and reiterated his move of Slav defense and Symslov variation as he did in the third game. Anand showed his brilliant skills once again in the match when he went for a new move against Topalov after he had played the 15th move. This move pressurized Topalov. The game was also interrupted by power failure for 10 minutes however this disruption in the match was not able to affect the concentration of contestants.

The game opened with both players exchanging their queens early in the game. After the power failure, Anand analyzed his move for long time so that he did not commit a mistake. Though Topalov pieces were better coordinated, it was Anand who cleverly exchanged pieces at any given opportunity. The players who both had a rook and minor piece with sme number of pawns decided to sign up the game up for a draw after the 44th move.

Anand who has taken the lead of 3-2 in the 12 game tournament will play the sixth game on May 1(Saturday). He will open the match with white pieces and he has also got the advantage of opening the seventh game also by white pieces.
