The 2018 Asian Games, which will be the 18th edition of the multi-sport event is scheduled to take place from 18th August to 2nd September. Also known as the Jakarta Palembang 2018, it is for the first time that Asian Games are being co-hosted in two cities – the Indonesian capital, Jakarta and the capital of the South Sumatra province, Palembang. The opening and closing ceremonies are to be held at the Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium in Jakarta.
The Asian Games 2018 venue clusters have previously organized several major multi-sports events, including the 2011 Southeast Asian Games for 4,000 athletes from 11 National Olympic Committees. There are two exhibition centres hosting around 13 indoor sports events. Facilities have been laid down in the capital city of Jakarta and Palembang in four different clusters (three in Jakarta and one in Palembang). It has been reported that 15 arenas for matches and 11 training arenas in West Java and Banten (sharing border with Jakarta) will be used for execution of the Games. In aggregate, there will be 80 venues for competitions and training.
The centerpiece, Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, inaugurated on January 14 by Indonesian President Joko Widodo prior to the country’s men's football friendly against Iceland, will alone be hosting 13 sporting events, including athletics.
