India have a good chance of winning multiple medals in boxing in the Asian Games 2023 to be staged from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou. Back in the 2018 Jakarta Games, India clinched three medals and will be hoping to build on the tally this time around. Overall, with 57 boxing medals to their names, India present themselves as strong contenders.

Nikhat Zareen and Lovlina Borgohain are two of the top boxers from the country and the focus will be on them. Even as Zareen will compete in the women’s 50 kg category, Borgohain will take part in the 75 kg event.

Back in 2021, Borgohain became the third Indian boxer to win an Olympic medal after she clinched bronze in Tokyo in the 69kg category. She failed in the Commonwealth Games last year after making an exit in the quarterfinal, but made amends by winning the gold medal in the world championship back in March. Apart from that, she also became the champion in the 2022 Asian Championship.

Zareen, on the other hand, has been in excellent rhythm, especially in the last two years or so. Last year, she won the gold medal in the 50kg light flyweight division in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games after beating Northern Islands’ Mc Naul 5-0 in the finals.

Earlier this year, Zareen bagged her second gold medal in the world championships by beating Thi Tham Nguyen. She also became the second Indian woman after the legendary Mary Kom to win multiple medals at the world championships.

Deepak Bhoria, Shiva Thapa, Lakshya Chahar, Jaismine Lamboria and Preeti Pawar are some of the other participating wrestlers in the Asian Games 2023.

India, in the meantime, will not have the services of Nitu, Amit Panghal and Saweety Boora, who won the gold medal in the world championships.
