Bajrang Punia will be one of the top wrestlers for India Wrestling Squad Asian Games 2023 to be held in Hangzhou, China from September 23 to October 8. The veteran, who bagged the bronze medal in the Tokyo Olympics two years ago, is one of the major contenders to bring India a medal from the Asian Games.


Back in the 2018 Jakarta Games, Punia won the gold medal by defeating Japan’s Takatani Daichi. He will be looking to successfully defend the title. The 29-year-old will compete in the 65 kg category in the men’s freestyle event.

Antim Panghal, India’s first ever Under 20 world champion, is also a part of the squad. The 19-year-old has been impressive thus far in his career, having also won the silver medal in the Asian Wrestling championship. Panghal, who hails from Hisar, Haryana, also created history by becoming the first Indian woman to successfully defend her U20 title.


Deepak Punia is another wrestler the focus will be on. Back in 2019, he won the silver media in the World Championships despite nursing a shoulder and thumb injury. In the Asian Championship earlier this year, he also bagged the silver medal. Deepak will be competing in the 86 kg category in the men’s freestyle event.


The focus will also be on Pooja Gehlot, who will take part in the women’s freestyle 50 kg category. Last year, the 26-year-old wrestler, clinched the bronze medal in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games. Back in 2019, the youngster also bagged silver in the U23 World Championships.


Mansi Ahlawat, who will compete in the 57 kg women’s freestyle event, is also contender to bring India a medal. Last year, she won the bronze medal in the U23 World Championships.


Sonam Malik (62kg), Radhika (68kg), Vicky (97kg), Narinder Cheema (97kg) and Gyanender (60kg) are some of the other participants in Asian Games 2023.
