The fifth day of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games gets underway as India continues its charge in different competitions. No new sport is being introduced on Day 5 of the games as we will stick to the same events that were held on Day 4.
On Day 4, lifters continued what has become a trend so far in the competition, adding a Gold and a Bronze medal. The Gold medal came through Punam Yadav and the Bronze came through Vikas Thakur. Day 4 was also the first time in this year's competition that India claimed medals in Shooting. Manu Bhaker and Heena Sidhu won the Gold and the Silver medals respectively, in 10m Air Pistol. In Men's 10m Air rifle, Ravi Kumar won Bronze. Elsewhere, in Women's Skeet, Saniya Sheikh finished 4th, one place below a guaranteed medal.
In boxing, India kept up their dominant performances. Legendary Mary Kom secured at least the Bronze Medal when she defeated her young Scottish opponent Meghan Gordon with ease. In Hockey, Indian Women's team staged a remarkable comeback to beat England by 2 goals to 1, after trailing them for more than two quarters. The men's team beatWales 4-3.
Day 5 begins with the return of Indian Lawn Bowlers, with most of their first rounds commencing. In Athletics, there is an early qualification round for youngster Tejaswin Shankar. At just 19 years old, Shankar holds the national High Jump record. There is also participation in Women's 400m as Poonamma and Hima go through their early heats.
In Table Tennis, the Indian Men's Team takes on Singapore in the semifinals. The Bronze and Gold medal matches will take place on the same day. In Badminton, India's Mixed Team plays Malaysia in the Finals.
Weightlifting enters its final day as India has 3 participants on Day 5. Pardeep Singh, Gurdeep Singh, and Purnima Pandey are the only Indian lifters left in the competition.
India will look to continue their dominance in weightlifting and shooting as Day 5 brings the best athletes to the fore.
Note: The events of the day can be followed on Sony Six, Ten and Ten 3 (Hindi commentary). Sony Liv will be streaming the events live. You can also follow live commentary on Sportskeeda.com.
