Commonwealth Games 2018: List of Indians who broke records

As the 2018 Commonwealth Games comes to a close, India will be celebrating the outstanding performance of the whole contingent, which managed to bring back a total of 66 medals including 26 gold medals across various events. The contingent, comprising of an exciting lot of teenagers and experienced campaigners, finished the competition in third place, behind Australia and England.

In the process of bagging the top honours, some of the athletes also broke the previous Commonwealth Games record in their respective categories, etching their names in the record books with some spectacular efforts.

Here are nine such athletes, whose record-breaking attempts did not go unnoticed.


#9 Jitu Rai - Men's 10m Air Pistol Shooting

Jitu Rai, one of India's biggest hopes coming into the competition did not disappoint in the qualifiers with a score of 570 in the qualifiers that placed him 4th on the table with compatriot Om Mitharval finishing on top with a score of 584.

In the finals, Rai looked a class apart as he blazed through the various rounds in the finals to comfortable finish with a score of 235.1 and continued his purple patch in shooting events from the past year, where he won four gold medals and one bronze medal at the ISSF events.

The 17-year-old created waves with an impressive show in the Women's 10m Air Rifle event in which she clinched the silver medal after she shot with a total score of 247.2 to tie on first place with Singapore's Martina Lindsay Veloso. However, in the shootout, Mehuli managed 9.9 to Martina's 10.3 as she settled with silver.

The teenager did not have the best of qualifiers as she qualified fifth with a score of 413.7 to leader Apurvi Chandela's 423.2. But in the finals, she upped her game as she put on a determined performance that put her above the rest.

With a final score of 247.2, she penned her name down in the history books as the holder of the new highest score in the Commonwealth Games.

As Tejaswini Sawant rejoiced after her 457.9 attempt which helped her clinch the gold medal, there was more reason to celebrate as she had also broken the previously set record of 449.1 by Singapore's Xiang Wei Jasmine in the 2014 Glasgow edition.

The 37-year old, who comes from the city of Kolhapur, clinched her third gold medal from the Commonwealth Games, after her previous bout in 2006 where she won gold in the 10m air rifle pairs event and the 10m air rifle individual competition.

Qualifying third, Tejaswini put in a spirited performance in the finals that saw her overcome some tense moments to finish on top with a stunning score of 457.9.

Standing tall amidst some experienced shooters, 16-year-old shooter Manu Bhaker qualified for the finals of the event with a combined score of 388 from four attempts (98, 98, 96, 96), topping the qualifiers list. However, what she did not know was what was in store for her in the finals.

Competing with some experienced names in the finals along with compatriot Heena Sidhu, the teenager swept aside all her tension and put on a composed performance that saw her bag the gold medal with a score of 240.9. The score was also a new Commonwealth Games record, a moment to cherish for the teenager.

Following her silver medal victory in the Women's10m Air Pistol event, India's first-ever World No. 1 shooter Heena Sidhu continued her dominant run with a gold medal in the Women's 25m Air Pistol event.

After a dismal show in the precision qualifiers stage, where she finished 7th, she came back strong in the rapid shooting stage where she picked 293 points to qualify to third place with a total score of 579, one place behind India's Annu Singh.

In the finals, Heena led all the way through as she asserted her dominance in each round with a show of precision and concentration to finish with a score of 38 out of 50, claiming the record for the highest score in the event's history at the Games.

#4 Anish - Men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol

As 15-year-old Anish clinched the gold medal in the Men's 25m Rapid Fire Pistol event, he created history by becoming the youngest ever Indian to clinch a gold medal in the history of the competition.

Battling with nerves of steel, Anish finished third in Stage 1 of the qualifiers with a score of 286 while his 294-point effort in the second stage saw him qualify as the leader of the pack going into the finals.

In the finals, Anish scored four sets of 5 and finished with a total of 30 from a maximum of 40 to clinch the gold medal ahead of Australia's Sergei Evglevski and England's Sam Gowin.

Anish's effort in the finals also put his name in the record books as his finals effort smashed the previous mark of 23 set by Australia's David Chapman in 2014.

#3 Sanjeev Rajput - Men's 50m 3 Position Rifle Shooting

On the penultimate day of the competition, Sanjeev Rajput blazed through the finals stage to clinch a gold medal and set a new record for the highest score in the event in the history of the Commonwealth Games with a mark of 454.5.

Sanjeev made a mark in the qualifying stage itself with a strong showing of 1180 that saw him crushing Gagan Narang's qualifiers record of 1166 which was set in 2010. With a total of 391 in the kneeling category, 399 in Prone and 390 in Standing, Sanjeev qualified on first place.

In the finals, the 37-year-old excelled and maintained his grasp of the lead with consistent shows as he finished with a total score of 454.5, comfortably erasing the previous record of 452.9 which was held by England's Daniel Rivers from the 2014 Glasgow edition of the Games.

A gold medallist from the 48kg category at the 2014 Glasgow games, Sanjita Chanu continued her dominance in the Commonwealth Games with yet another gold medal victory from the 53kg category.

The 24-year-old Manipuri weightlifter lifted a total of 192 kg divided as 84kg in the snatch category and 108kg in the Clean & Jerk category to win the gold medal and finish with 10kg more than Papua New Guinea's silver medallist Lao Dika Toua

With her 84kg successful attempt in the snatch category, she broke the previous Commonwealth Games record of 83kg held by India's Swarti Singh from the 2014 Glasgow edition.

The headlines after the first day of the Commonwealth Games was grabbed by Mirabai Chanu, who broke a plethora records on her way to clinching India's first gold in the competition in the 48kg category.

In the snatch category of the event, Chanu lifted a record 86 kg to better her Commonwealth record of 85kg in 2017 while in the Clean & Jerk category, her herculean effort of 110kg erased her previous record of 109kg.

Overall, she lifted a whopping total of 196kg to clinch the gold medal in style and her dominance was outlined by the fact that the silver-medal effort was at 170kg, 26 kg lesser than Mirabai Chanu's record lift of 196kg.
