Commonwealth Games 2018: PV Sindhu to be India's flag bearer in Gold Coast

Badminton - Olympics: Day 14
PV Sindhu

What's the story?

India is bustling with preparations for the upcoming XXI edition of the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. Leading the way for the Indian contingent with the flag soaring high in Gold Coast will be ace shuttler and Rio Olympics silver medallist PV Sindhu.

In case you didn't know...

This is the first time in the last three editions of the Commonwealth Games that a badminton player has been selected to head the way and be the flagbearer in the opening ceremony of the Games. This honour has been bestowed previously upon the likes of Sports Minister and Olympic silver medallist Rajyavardhan Singh Rathore, Abhinav Bindra, to name a few.

The heart of the matter

The Commonwealth Games which are to begin from the 4th of April and continue till the 15th have pooled in a lot of expectations from the country. PV Sindhu has performed exceptionally well in all such big events, being an Olympic silver medallist herself.

After her bronze medal win at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, it is needless to say that she is looking to up her performance and fight her way to win a gold medal this time. The 22-year-old, who made it to the semi-finals of the All England Championship last week, is looking to make it big and this kind of honour of being selected to be the flagbearer for India at such a prestigious event is sure to inspire her to perform better.

What's next?

The former World No. 2 is India's best chance at winning a gold in the women's singles category. The opening ceremony will be wonderful to witness with the 22-year-old leading the Indian contingent.

Author's Take

It's a special day for badminton in India with PV Sindhu being singled out for this honour after three editions of the Commonwealth Games.

We can safely pin all our hopes on this year's brilliant Indian contingent and patiently wait for the flag to be hoisted up and Sindhu to lead the way to India's glory, come 4th of April.
