Meanwhile India’s Badminton team has made a headstart as India romped Kenya by 5-0. The team that won Bronze in Melbourne 2006 is seeded second in this competition. Jwala Gutta and V.Diju won comfortably 21-8 and 21-5. Saina Nehwal stood upto all expectations by thrashing her opponent by 21-11, 21-4. Chetan Anand was also prolific as he settled the game in just 2 sets 21-13 and 21-7. The India contingent at the Commonwealth Games has huge expectations from the Badminton contingent.

In Tennis, Rohan Bopanna gave Indian contingent a good start but failed to take it further as inspite of winning his own singles game he failed to usher his female partner in the mixed doubles. Bopanna had a mixed day hence with a win and a loss. Not a great start for India here. In his singles match, he defeated Robert Buyinza of Uganda 6-1, 6-4. In the mixed doubles game, Bopanna and Nirupama Sanjeev lost out to Australia’s pair of Anastasia Rodionova and Paul Hanley by 6-3, 3-6 and 6-3 at the R.K. Khanna Tennis Stadium.

Indian paddlers have set the Table Tennis contingent off to a good start as they defeated Sri Lanka 3-0. The women’s team was Bronze medalist at Melborne four years ago.

The Commonwealth Games action has finally begun and all the negativity that surrounded the games seems to have fittered away. However, there was one embarassing moment as before the start of the 4*100m relay swimming men’s which was ultimately won by Australia moss was found in the pool. This had to be cleaned up before the event resumed. The commentators were disgusted, however this little glitch if it can be called that may be ignored in the background of the worst possible consequence that have been contemplated before.

Tomorrow, the action will be a lot more spread out as Delhi will see 18 gold medals being given away in comparison to today’s 8. The number of disciplines offering these medals will also rise upto six from three as other disciplines will continue to work through the initial stages.
