Commonwealth Games Delhi 2010 Delhi Day 4: 3 more golds for India, Australia first on Medals tally

The Commonwealth Games are off and running and we are now in the thick of the action, day 3 offered the contingents 28 medals out of which a healthy portion was taken up by India so as to hold on to the second spot. On Day 3 so far, India has added 3 gold medals to their tally. These medals came from theexpected realms of shooting and wrestling. However, it was a woman wrestler this time around who made India proud as grappler Geeta became the first individual wresltler woman gold medalist in the Commonwealth Games DElhi 2010 for India.

The medals started coming from expected quarters in the morning as in the pairs 25m rapid fire pistol event Gurpreet Singh and Vijay Kumar bagged the first position. Gurpreet Singh was a common link as he partnered Omkara Singh to another gold medal in the 10m air pistol pairs event.

The shooting contingent has given India the maximum medals so far and after admirable performances. Earlier, Gagan Narang, Abhinav Bindra, Anisa Sayyid have all contribute to India’s medal tally with more than one medals. Gagana Narang especially sizzled with two golds and perfect scores.

Indians are turning out to be precision players in the Commonwealth Games as the Indian Archery Team too proved its metal; today as both the men and women grabbed medals in their respective events. The men’s tikdi comprised by Ritul Chatterjee, Jignas Chittibomo and Chinna Raju Srither missed out on the gold medal to England by just two points. This could have been huge advantage to India had we won the gold here considering that England are right behind us on the tally.

The women’s archery team too bagged their share as they won the bronze. The team of Gagandeep Kaur, Jhano Hansdah and Bheigyabati Chanu surprised one and all with this resolute performance. Meanwhile India are to play Australia in the Men”s Hockey, being in the group of death this game is very crucial to India’s fortunes. Indian women lost to Australia 2-1 yesterday.

Indian Tennis is performing to their potenttial as Rushmi continues to be the giant killer in the women’s singles. She sent back the third seed Kathie O’brien back to her natives. Sania Mirza is partnering her in the women’s doubles and the team is now in the semi finals.

Sania Mirza herself is in the women’s semi-finals and was seen posing with husband Shoaib Malik. She is also surging ahead towards a medal with ace indian and fmr. Olympic bronze medalist Leander Paes. Leander Paes is also teamed up with the first India to ever wim a grand slam title Mahesh Bhupathi in the doubles event.

In wrestling, Geeta became the first Indian woman wrestler to win an individual gold in her 55kg category. She defeated Lovina Odohi Edward of Nigeria in the final match.

Indian gymnasts are not known over the world like Indian shooters or weightlifters therefore its a matter of pride that Ashish Kumar bagged the Bronze medal in men’s floor exercise.

Also Indian weightlifters continued their steady performance as Sudhir Kumar finished in the third position in the 77kg category to contribute to India’s medal tally.

The Badminton contingent took a historic step towards the gold medal as in the team event Saina Nehwal led India into the semi-finals after they defeated Canada. MEanwhile Malaysia who will be India’s most notable opponents and favorites are continuing their good run; they defeated New Zealand 3-0.

Top Seeded SomdevDevvarman is also in the semi-finals of the men’s singles event as expected of the top seed. Lets hope we have a gold medal from him too.
