In our modern age, once popular games, handball seem to fall to the wayside. Many of us who admire modern age games will not know exactly what is a Handball. It is played in many parts of the world but is especially popular in Great Britain, Ireland, and the United States. The game was first played in Ireland during the 11th century. Irish immigrants brought the game to the United States in the 1880′s. The ball used is made of black rubber, has a diameter of 1 7/8 inches, and weighs 2 9/10 ounces.

There are two types of handball courts. The four-wall court is enclosed by four walls, a floor, and a ceiling. This court is 23 feet wide and 46 feet long. The front wall is 23 feet high while the rear wall must be at least 10 feet high. A line, called the short line, is drawn 23 feet behind the front wall and parallel to it. The service line is 5 feet in front of the short line and parallel to it.

The one-wall court is 34 feet long and 20 feet wide. The wall is 16 feet high. The short line is drawn parallel to the front wall, 16 feet behind it, and the service line is 9 feet behind the short line. One-wall courts are often outdoors.

Rules of HandballHandball may be played as a contest between two persons or two teams. A team consists of two players. The game begins with the serve. The server stands between the short line and the service line. If he is playing with a partner, the partner stands in a service box during the serve. the service box lies between the short line and the service line and can be no more than 18 inches from a sidewall.The first side or individual to score 21 points wins the game.

Though the game of Handball is not that much popular in the English-speaking world till today, it is played in all parts of America, Canada, Australia, Britain and Ireland at present. The teams from these countries do compete at World and Olympic championships regularly but they are still waiting to be considered amongst the top ranking nations of the world. At present, there are 159 members federations representing the world organisation called IHF and approximately 1,130,000 teams and a total of 31 million players, trainers, officials and referees are attached with the huge organisation.
