IIM-Bangalore take top prize at Sangram, the Inter-IIM sports meet

Inter-IIM spots meet Sangram concluded at IIM-K on the 15th of November; IIM Bangalore took the trophy

The 2015 edition of Sangram, the inter-IIM sports meet, concluded at IIM Kozhikode on 15th November with IIM Bangalore edging out the hosts to retain the overall trophy. In a closely fought contest, IIM Bangalore won 11 golds with IIM Kozhikode just behind with 9 golds. IIM Trichy managed to open their account with a single gold.

The meet was flagged off on the 13th of November, with IIM B taking on IIM T in cricket and football. IIM B won both the matches to start off their campaign successfully. IIM B also secured their first gold on Day 1, with wins in straight sets over both IIM T and IIM K in Volleyball. IIM K too started well in a couple of events with wins over last year’s gold medalists, IIM B, in women’s basketball and men’s tennis.

IIM T, last year’s winner in hockey, defeated the hosts to start off.

Day 2 of Sangram had a long list of sports lined up and a number of events were decided. The day started off with swimming where IIM B and IIM K won gold in the men’s and women’s events respectively. IIM B put up another dominating performance in cricket against IIM K to secure gold.

IIM B also grasped the gold medal in men’s kho-kho, women’s throwball, men’s table tennis, men’s chess and women’s carrom. IIM K too opened to their gold tally with victories in women’s pool, women’s chess and women’s badminton.

IIM B led the medals tally after day 2 with IIM K not too far behind.

The last day had some high profile decider matches that drew large crowds. IIM B and IIM K went head to head for gold in men’s basketball, women’s table tennis, men’s badminton and men’s carrom. IIM B won badminton and carrom comfortably while IIM K put up a dominating show to clinch gold in football and women’s table tennis.

The basketball match was closely fought in the first two quarters, but IIM B came out all guns blazing to take the match away. IIM T won their first gold in Sangram with a win over IIM B in hockey. There was some drama as well in men’s pool as all three teams won one match each in the initial round robin. In the tie breaker that followed, there was again a deadlock, but IIM K clinched gold based on the number of frames won.

The event completed with IIM B lifting the trophy again. However, unlike the previous edition, the contest was much closer and was open till the very last day. Next year’s edition would be hosted by IIM Bangalore and the other 2 IIMs would look forward to giving the hosts a tough fight and try to bring back the trophy.
