Lagori to get a new boost with the Indian Lagori Premier League

The Indian Lagori Premier League will help popularise the sport in the country

The traditional sport of lagori is seeing massive revival in India thanks to the launch of a new tournament -Indian Lagori Premier League (ILPL).

In an age where computer games have made its way into many households, the Karnataka Amateur Lagori Association (KALA) is bringing back the much loved game in a new avatar.

KALA, an associated body of the Amateur Lagori Federation of India (ALFI) introduced the sport in Mysuru with several youngsters showing a keen interest in the sport.

The inaugural edition was held in Vijayapura recently under the aegis of ALFI and International Lagori Federation.

Karnataka Warriors, Maharashtra Fighters, Mumbai Lions, Instant Panthers, Delhi Kings, Chennai Crackers, Deccan Shacks, Kolkata Tigers, Gwalior Royals and Punjab Spikes were the 10 teams that took part in the event. One overseas player featured in each of the 10 teams.

KALA founder secretary Basavaraj Bagewadi was visibly excited about hosting the tournament in Vijayapura. "It is indeed a proud moment for all of us to host the first ILPL in Vijayapura", he said.

"The ILPL is based on the lines of the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Pro-Kabaddi League (PKL)", he added.

Maharashtra Fighters won the first edition of the ILPL, while Mumbai Lions finished second.

The fighters took home a cheque of Rs. 5,55,555, while Lions received Rs, 2,22,222.

Bagewadi praised Santosh Gurav's efforts of introducing the game in 32 countries across the world. “When other countries have accepted the game, we, in India, must strive to make it a global game. KALA is doing so by forming its units in all districts," he said.

Mumbai will host the Lagori World Cup in January 2016.
