A night where everything went right for Liverpool FC and the man of the moment: Mr Steven Gerrard. It was the inspiration that we needed, and it came at the perfect timing.
How many times has our talismanic captain come to our rescue? He came up with a match winning goal at Istanbul, he provided some magic at the Millennium Stadium in the FA Cup back in 2006, and now he has become the first player to score a hat-trick against Everton in the Merseyside derby since the days of Ian Rush. The best midfielder of his generation, beyond any doubt.
Attack is the best form of Defence
Yes. That has been the mentality this season, and it proved to be effective yesterday night. Liverpool FC kept tight at the back and brought the ball forward well. Pepe Reina was barely tested in this game, as his job was limited to that odd clearance and picking up of the ball.
The hosts were in full control of this fixture and never looked in danger of succumbing to their 4th loss on the trot against their fierce rivals at Anfield. Liverpool maintained a very high line and continually sought to find a way to get past Everton’s defence.
The Perfect Attacking Combination
Andy Carroll, Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez all started yesterday’s tie against Everton. It was a rare occasion of which all 3 of Liverpool’s ‘supposedly’ key attacking players played. The reality is, that in the 3 appearances where all 3 of them have started, Liverpool have managed to score a total of 11 goals, unlike the sorry total of 33 that Liverpool have come up with all season long.
I see it as a partnership that we should continue, with it being a particularly effective one. Interestingly, Craig Bellamy didn’t even make the bench against Everton, but Liverpool must also be less reliant on the Welshman, given his injury woes.
Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez showed understanding worthy of drawing comparisons to the Torres-Gerrard partnership, as the duo combined to produce two stunning goals against the Toffees. Suarez, despite being poor with some of his touches and shots throughout the match, did provide moments of magic – his dribble for Gerrard’s second was an incredible run – and did the job for Liverpool FC.
How about a Martin Skrtel and Martin Kelly Central Partnership?
In light of Daniel Agger’s prolonged absence due to injury, how about we try our young defender throughout the process? Much has already been made of his ability to play in the center, and Jamie Carragher is already past his peak, so why not we try Martin Kelly in the center when Glen Johnson returns? Coates has seemed a bit unsteady in his first few appearances for Liverpool whilst Martin Kelly has seemed unfazed by challenge.
Furthermore, the young Englishman has the hunger and the ability (tackling and passing) to excel in the role. He might struggle initially with the positioning aspect of the role, but I believe that he will turn out to be an excellent and versatile defender.
