Teddy Bear and Grizzly Bear had a fight.I hear it went on well into the night.Grizzly had teddy intact in a headlock,Teddy mistook contact for wedlock.And they lived happily ever after.
What happened last year with the Memphis Grizzlies made even less sense than the above few lines. They barely sneaked into the playoffs, and they ended up beating the San Antonio Spurs 4-2.
The Memphis Grizzlies had never ever won a single playoff game until that series. Their record stood at 0-12. Then they went on to beat the team with the best record in the Western Conference, the San Antonio Spurs. Without the services of Rudy Gay, who was out with an injury for that postseason.
That was such a Twilight zone episode that I ended up making a 40 pic comic/graphic novel about it trying to make sense of it.
The Grizzlies are top ten in points allowed and rebound differential. The Memphis Grizzlies are also among the league’s best at forcing turnovers. Their defense pressures opponents’ offense into hasty mistakes. Tony Allen may be the best perimeter defender in the league and is apt to stifle the star scorer he’s often matched up against. Going inside, the Grizzlies have one of the best frontcourts in the league. Marc Gasol, Zach Randolph and Rudy Gay form a formidable trio, one which can outplay every other frontcourt of any team any day.
Any day, not everyday. Because the play of the frontline depends upon how well the backcourt incorporates them into the action. Mike Conley has been dependable and needs to be consistent to give the Memphis Grizzlies a shot at the title.
One reason why I want to watch this team in the postseason is Zach Randolph. Mainly because his game defies reason at times. He gets his points in some unconventional ways down in the low block. A few years ago, he was seen as a black hole that would suck in an entire team’s offense. Since last postseason battle with the Spurs, Zach Randolph transformed his image into one of the most reliable low post threats. He became reliable in terms of not screwing up on and off court, not reliable scoring wise which he was earlier anyway.
It’s a delicious prospect to watch this young and tenacious team go up against other Western Conference powerhouses, the way things stand currently it seems they will face the LA Clippers first. No team wants to meet the Memphis Grizzlies in the playoffs, because of how unpredictable they are and how much they rely on their unpredictability to make their opponent fold.
