Nike has officially announced that “Back to the Future” shoes are going to be out in some time. Even if they do release the shoes for sale to the public, a tentative date has not been mentioned, reports The Hindu.

In 1989, Nike were asked to design futuristic shoes for the movie “Back to the Future II”, which was incidentally set up in the futuristic world of 2015.

Nike’s president and Chief Executive Officer Mark Parker, said on Nike’s official website, “We started creating something for fiction and we turned it into fact, inventing a new technology that will benefit all athletes.”

The shoes were unveiled by Michael J.Fox in a video, the actor who is famous for his role in the 1985/89 flick.

Nike said in a statement, “This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s “power laces”, combining the archetype invention with digital technology. The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support. But this is just the first iteration.”

Nike did not mention if the shoes will be made public, for the general public to buy. However, the limited edition shoes will be first auctioned, the proceeds of which will go to the Michael J Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

The American multinational corporation will give further details about the auction in Spring 2016.

Nike is currently testing the technology for various sports, and is taking feedbacks so as to modify the Nike Mag’s “power laces” accordingly. Nike believes that such technology will help the athletes in their performances and can be a ‘norm-breaking’ product.

Mark Parker further added, “By imagining the future, we create it. Product that comes alive, with on-demand comfort and support when you need, product that senses you and adapts to you is right around the corner”.

The video of Michael J Fox trying the ‘Smart shoe’ can be seen below.
