Rio Olympics 2016: Sakshi Malik set for huge monetary rewards after bronze medal win

Sakshi Malik will receive plenty of cash (at least Rs 2.5 crore) after winning the bronze medal at the Rio Olympics 2016.

Sakshi, a girl from Haryana ended India’s long wait for a medal on the 12th day of the Rio Olympics 2016 when she won a bronze medal in the women’s wrestling 58kg category. After a spectacular performance at the wrestling arena, she became the first female wrestler from India to win an Olympic medal and the fourth Indian woman to achieve that goal.

“I never thought I would become the first woman wrestler from India to bag an Olympic medal in wrestling," she told The Hindu. "I hope the remaining wrestlers will also do well."

She was born in Haryana, where women were for some time not allowed to take part in the game like wrestling. In India, women wrestling started in the mid-1990s.But it was 2002 when the girls were allowed to train with the boys in Haryana.

Sakshi is set to receive cash prizes over 2.5 crores after her fantastic win at Rio. Here’s how:

State Government of Haryana has announced a mind-blowing bonus for the Olympics medallist. Rupees 2 crores for the bronze, 4 crores for silver and 6 crores for the gold medallist. Apart from this, the medallist will get land in the state.

It was earlier announced that the Indian Olympic Association for the first time would give Rs 50 lakh for the gold medal, Rs 30 lakh for the silver medal and Rs 20 lakh for the bronze medal. In addition, the coaches will be received an equivalent of 50 percent of the amount the athletes receive. So, apart from Sakshi, her coach Ishwar Singh Dahiya also will get Rs 10 lakh.

President of IOA, N Ramachandran said, “this is the first time we are doing it and we hope that this will form an additional incentive for the athletes and we are looking at a higher than ever medal haul”.

Indian Railways had promised earlier a cash reward of Rs 1 crore for the gold medallist, Rs 75 lakh for silver the medallist and Rs 50 lakh for the bronze medallist. So, Malik is getting the amount of Rs 50 lakh from Rail soon.

Bollywood superstar as well as this year’s Olympic Goodwill ambassador Salman Khan has also promised Rs 1, 01,000 for the athletes.

JSW group will give Rs 15 lakhs to the bronze medallist.

Sakshi’s coach Ishwar Singh Dahiya told the Hindustan Times, “Girls once not welcome at the Chotu Ram Stadium have now become its pride,"

Sakshi proved that women are not weak and they have that temperament to win a tough game, now she is the real hero of India.
