Kazan - Hosts Russia consolidated their leading position on the Universiade medals table, winning 12 more gold medals on the second day here.

Russia has fielded the largest delegation of the tourney and is taking part in all the 27 sports being contested, reported Xinhua.

In Monday’s haul, Russia won two synchronised swimming golds, two athletics titles (women’s discus throw and women’s long jump), three rowing victories, two belt wrestling titles and one gold apiece in gymnastics, diving and fencing.

Now, they lead with 19 gold, nine silver and 15 bronze medals on top of the table. South Korea is a distant second with five golds and one bronze.

However, China only managed to win two more golds Monday to make it four in total and are third. They won the medals from fencing and diving. China won an all-time high 75 gold medals two years ago in Shenzhen.

Japan also has four gold medals but had to settle for fourth as it won one less silver than China.
