This day in history: 22nd March

Cricket

1992: The unforgettable and most farcical World Cup semi-finals of all time. Rain and some farcial decisions leave South Africa needing 21 runs of just 1 ball to chase England‘s total of 252, after a 10 minute rain delay (before which they needed 22 off 13 balls).

1995: Sri Lanka’s first ever overseas Test victory, against New Zealand.

2001: India beat Australia in Chennai by 2 wickets to win the series 2-1, which featured the epic comeback at Eden Gardens by Rahul Dravid and VVS Laxman.

2009: England women’s cricket team win their 3rd World Cup.

Football

1936: John McKenna, Liverpool‘s first manager and also the Football League president, died at the age of 81.

Basketball

1972: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar wins NBA MVP award.

Golf

1934: First ever Masters golf championship began at Augusta, Georgia.

Boxing

1967: Mohammed Ali knocks out Zora Folley in the 7th round to win the World Heavyweight title.
