1970: Swindon Town won the inaugural Anglo-Italian Cup, beating Napoli 3-0 in a final that had to be abandoned in the 79th minute.

2000: Tottenham Hotspur completed the signing of long-serving Wimbledon goalkeeper Neil Sullivan on a free transfer. Sullivan made 249 appearances in the Barclays Premier League during his career, keeping 66 clean sheets.

Cricket

1912: Two Test hat-tricks in one day for Australian legspinner Jimmy Matthews. It’s a unique feat, but what makes it even more amazing is that he didn’t need the help of any fielders: two of the six were bowled, two lbw, and two caught-and-bowled.

1956: Birth of Jeff Dujon, who went on to be one of the greatest West Indies’ wicketkeeper-batsmen.

1974: Birth of Misbah-ul-Haq, a Pakistani cricketer and current Test and One Day International captain of the Pakistan national cricket team.

1977: Birth of Ashwell Prince, who is a left-handed middle order batsman and he plays Test and One Day International cricket for South Africa.

2011: Chennai Super Kings beat the Royal Challengers Bangalore to clinch the IPL trophy for a second consecutive season.

1938: Birth of Jerry West, W Virginia, NBA superstar (LA Lakers, Olympic-gold-1960).

1964: Birth of Armon Gilliam, NBA forward (Milwaukee Bucks, NJ Nets).

Tennis

1862: Birth of Henry W Slocum Jr, tennis champ (US Open-1888).

1964: Birth of Beth Herr, Middletown Ohio, tennis star.

1965: Birth of Catherine Tanvier, France, tennis star.
