1981: Birthday of Australian captain Michael Clarke.

1988: Test cricket debut of West Indian bowling great Curtly Ambrose, against Pakistan in Georgetown.

2011: India win their second ODI World Cup, 28 years after they won their first. They beat Sri Lanka in the finals, becoming the first ever hosts to win the Cup.

Football

1927: Birthday of Ferenc Puskas, one of the greatest strikers of all time.

1966: Birthday of Teddy Sheringham, winner of the Treble in 1999 with Manchester United. Considered one of the best English strikers of his time.

Basketball

1969: Milwaukee Bucks sign Kareem Abdul-Jabbar as their first round pick in the 1969 draft, after a coin-toss with the Phoenix Suns for the pick.
