1953: One of the famous ‘Busby Babes’ who died in the Munich 1958 tragedy, Duncan Edwards, made his debut as a Manchester United player. He was considered a rare talent, and died when he was just 21.

1987:Birthday of Germany and Real Madrid footballer Sami Khedira.

1930: First ever triple century in Test history, scored by English batsman Andrew Sandham.

1989: Birthday of English fast bowler Steve Finn.

Basketball

1989: Kareem Abdul-Jabbar plays his last game ever in Seattle.
