2005: Edwin Van der Sar joins Manchester United. Manchester United dipped into the transfer market to complete the signing of Dutch goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar from Fulham.

1999: Boca Juniors’ Argentinian-record unbeaten streak ended at 40 with a 4-0 loss to Independiente.

Cricket

1994: On the 50th anniversary of the D-Day landings, Brian Lara made the highest score in first-class cricket history: 501 not out.

1957: Birth of Mike Gatting, a former English cricketer, who played first-class cricket for Middlesex and for England from 1977 to 1995, captaining the national side in twenty-three Test matches between 1986 and 1988.

1943: Birth of Asif Iqbal, Pakistani cricketer who captained Pakistan and Kent CCC. He is now an ICC Match Referee.

1991: 25-year-old Graeme Hick made his England Test debut against West Indies at Headingley.

Tennis

1956: Birth of Bjorn Borg, a former World No. 1 tennis player from Sweden. Between 1974 and 1981 he won 11 Grand Slam singles titles. He won five consecutive Wimbledon singles titles and six French Open singles titles.
