The Kentucky Derby is a horse race for 3 year old thoroughbreds and it takes place once every year in Louisville, Kentucky. It is held on the first Saturday of May, as a finale for the Kentucky Derby Festival. It is popularly by different names such as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports”, with respect to the average duration of the race. It is also called as “The Run for the Roses” as the winner of the race is draped with a blanket of roses.

This year, NBC got a rating of 10.9 from Nielsen, specifically for the race part of the broadcast, which was 16% more than what it got in 2012. Consequently, it became the best overnight rating for the race since 1992, tying it with the rating it received in 2010.
