Recently, the renowned magazine Forbes released a list of the most valuable sports brands in the world for 2013. Here, we take a look at the 10 of the most valuable sports events in the world for the year 2013.

This is not a list that has been prepared after conducting a poll. Rather, this list has been compiled using hard financial data. To compile this list of the most valuable sports events in terms of brand value, Forbes took the average revenue earned from the event per day of the event from avenues such as media, sponsorship, merchandise and tickets.

10. MLB All-Star Week

The Major League Baseball All-Star game is held between the National League and the American League with players and managers for both teams selected by the fans. It is generally played on either the second or third Tuesday of July and is supposed to denote the midpoint of the Baseball season.

This year, the All-Star game was held at Citi Field. Even though it got only a rating of 6.9, equal to the second lowest rating ever, given in 2011, an increase of 9% for a 30 second ad saw it earn almost $600,000.

9. Kentucky Derby

The Kentucky Derby is a horse race for 3 year old thoroughbreds and it takes place once every year in Louisville, Kentucky. It is held on the first Saturday of May, as a finale for the Kentucky Derby Festival. It is popularly by different names such as “The Most Exciting Two Minutes In Sports” or “The Fastest Two Minutes in Sports”, with respect to the average duration of the race. It is also called as “The Run for the Roses” as the winner of the race is draped with a blanket of roses.

This year, NBC got a rating of 10.9 from Nielsen, specifically for the race part of the broadcast, which was 16% more than what it got in 2012. Consequently, it became the best overnight rating for the race since 1992, tying it with the rating it received in 2010.

8. Daytona 500

The Daytona 500 is a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race that is a length of 500 miles, and held in Daytona, Florida, hence giving it the name. In the entire NASCAR calendar, the Daytona 500 is considered the most important race, as well as having the most prize money.

In the past 5 years, this edition’s Daytona 500 race was the highest rated, with a Nielsen rating of 9.9. It was also the most watched race in the past 5 years, with more than 16.7 million viewers.

7. UEFA Champions League

According to the UEFA, the current sales cycle, which falls between 2012-2015, the revenue that would be generated would be more than $1.76 billion every year.

3. FIFA World Cup

The FIFA World Cup is a tournament that is held every 4 years among the national teams of countries from all over the world. There is a 2 year qualification round that takes place to determine who are the 32 teams that actually play in the main tournament. The main tournament itself is held over a one month period, generally between June and July.

For the World Cup in 2014, that is going to be held in Brazil, where football is followed very passionately, it is projected that FIFA would earn a revenue of around $4 billion. Of this, 60% of the revenue is going to be earned with the help of the sale of broadcasting rights.

2. Summer Olympic Games

The Summer Olympic Games is a multi-sport event that takes place every 4 years. Originally an event that had about 40 events, the games now have 300 events, with more than 10,000 athletes from more than 200 matches. The 2012 edition was held in London while the 2016 edition is scheduled to be held in Rio de Janeiro, which will be the first time the Olympics are being held in the South American continent.

The Super Bowl is only second to the final of the UEFA Champions League in terms of viewership.

For this year’s Super Bowl, CBS, the broadcasters of the event, charged as much as $3.75 million for a 30 second ad. Even though the tickets sold declined compared to last year, the ad revenue for the broadcaster saw an increase of 7%.
