USA vs Slovenia 2-2: The cup is gone to the dogs

Landon Donovan scored the first goal for USA

Yes, you heard it right the tornament has gone to the dogs. The underdogs I mean. With Switzerland beating Spain, Serbia downing Germany and France mauled by Mexico. The reasons of these supposedly “disastrous” results have been devoted to many factors. The Jabulani ball, the high altitude and thin air of South Africa and defensive gameplay all have been said to be involved.

In reality the fact is that the “underdogs” have evolved to become much better teams. As simple as that.

In one of the most exciting matches of the tournament so far, USA made a superlative effort to make their way back to a 2-2 draw after lagging by two goals to Slovenia. This tournament means that group C was thrown wide open, with Slovenia on 4pts. And USA on 2 points with Algeria to play. The other two teams of the group are in action tonight which includes England who would like to register a win to draw level with Slovenia before their eventual meeting. The group is going to be very interesting hereon.

The two underdogs exhibited one of the most better played games in the tornament so far. Slovenia started off with the first goal that came in the 13 minute. Birsa hit a well controlled shot from 30 metres that deceived Tim Howard and landed into the net. They followed this up with some strong defensive play mixing it up with equally dramatic counter attacking moves.

They did not rely on this single goal and rightly so slotted in the second goal through Ljubijankic. He traded passes with Novakovic to outsmart the USA defense and achieve what should have been an unassailable lead.

The second half began with some inspirational play from Landon Donovan as the midfielder ran in the D with ease to slot the ball to the goalkeeper’s nearpost. This goal came in the 48th minute and inspired the team to resurrect their sinking ship.

The gaffer’s son Bradley was exceptional during this play as he played the perfect midfielder doing a bit of everything. And rightly so he completed the come back as he pushed the ball into the net after Altidore’s lofted pass.

The game finished tied at 2-2.
