Wayne Rooney‘s father, Thomas Rooney and his uncle, Richie Rooney were arrested today morning by the Merseyside and the Glasgow Police respectively in connection with a betting scam.
Fingers point towards Motherwell’s central midfielder Steve Jennings, to be the center of this scam. The player is already under investigation for match fixing when he was sent off during a game against Hearts last December.
Online betting company Blue Square, raised concerns the next day that several bets were placed on a player being sent off, when the odds were 10/1. A particular bet of £500 made from a newly created account from Liverpool drew the companies attention.
The Scotland FA chief executive Mr. Stewart Regan said
“While the investigation involves several other individuals outside Scotland, it is important to stress that the evidence gathered throughout this thorough period of investigation has involved only one Scottish match. Motherwell FC are aware of the situation and will issue a response in due course. The Scottish FA will make no further comment at this stage.”
We can only speculate from the arrests that since Steve Jennings is a Liverpool born lad and since Thomas Rooney is also from the same locale, there must be some sort of connection between the two individuals. Also since the £500 bet was placed from Liverpool, it only strengthens the case further against Thomas Rooney.
However, no link has been made with the Manchester United starlet Wayne Rooney and his brother John Rooney, who is currently playing for the MLS outfit New York Red Bulls.
No statements have been made by both the arrested parties.
