United World Wrestling (UWW) is all set to host the Asian Wrestling Olympic Qualifiers, starting on Friday, April 19, at Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. This qualifier is the penultimate campaign for the Indian wrestlers to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics 2024.
The World Qualification Tournament, which is scheduled to take place in May in Turkey, is the final Olympic qualifying campaign for the forthcoming Summer Games in Paris.
Notably, a total of 36 Paris 2024 spots are on offer in 18 weight divisions across Greco-Roman, men’s freestyle, and women’s freestyle categories in the Asian Olympic Qualifier in Bishkek.
The qualifying campaign in Bishkek will adopt a bracket system, where two semi-finalists from each weight division will secure quotas in their respective countries. Notably, there will be no gold-medal bouts or repechage rounds.
India is set to compete in 17 out of 18 categories, with the sole exception being the women’s 53 kg division. It’s important to note that Antim Panghal has already secured a spot in the Paris Olympics 2024 for India in this division by virtue of winning a bronze medal at the World Wrestling Championships 2023 in Belgrade.
