National level swimmer Saira Sirohi commits suicide

Saira won more than 110 national level medals

Multiple National level swimming medallist Saira Sirohi has committed suicide at her Ghaziabad home today. The 16-year old was being touted as a potential Olympic candidate, after notching up more than 110 medals across various national age categories.

She had stunned junior swimming fraternity last year by swimming 38 kilometres for 15 non-stop hours at her school. Saira was found hanging at her home in the afternoon, after coming back from school.

Her father Jaideep Sirohi is a part of the police department, and the cause for the suicide is unknown. There was no note found near her body, hence it is unknown why Saira took such a drastic step.

A source close to the Swimming Federation of India (SFI) said, “It is a very unfortunate incident that has happened. Saira had the potential to represent India, and was one of the most hard-working young swimmers in the country. We are still unable to believe it. She definitely had a chance to participate in the Olympics. In fact, she even told us that she wanted to participate in the 2020 Olympics.”
