Women's second seed Simona Halep also lost her match today. World No. 133 Zhang Shuai defeated the Romanian in straight sets.

Verdasco, who committed 90 unforced errors during the match, managed to hit 91 winners as he took advantage of Nadal's failing serve.

The pair played a 5-set match that lasted 4 hours and 40 minutes, with Verdasco winning the first set as Nadal wrested control back for the next two sets.

In the most shocking result of the day, Rafael Nadal lost to Davis Cup teammate, compatriot and sometime doubles partner Fernando Verdasco.
