While the Class of 2026 has not yet begun their senior season, there are already some of them committing to various schools, including Jonathan Sanderson. The four-star point guard, ranked No. 51 overall from the Class of 2026 by On3, announced on Sunday that he has committed to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. This was confirmed by On3's Joe Tipton.

He chose the Fighting Irish over Ohio State, Purdue, Illinois, Michigan State, Creighton and others. He also held official visits to Indiana, Michigan State and Notre Dame. He explained his decision to On3's Joe Tipton:

“I chose Notre Dame because it felt like the perfect fit for my style of play. I really like how they utilize their guards and the way Coach Shrewsberry sees and teaches the game. I also love the culture and environment surrounding the program." he said.

“My game is built on giving everything I have every time I step on the court. As a point guard, I can score at all three levels and create opportunities for others at a high level. A lot of people are also surprised by my athleticism—I take pride in bringing that edge to my game," he said.

Sanderson also had a message to the Fighting Irish fans:

“Notre Dame fans should know they’re getting a player who competes every single play and is very high energy. Winning comes first, and I’ll do whatever it takes to help us succeed," Sanderson told On3.

Jonathan Sanderson plays for La Lumiere in Indiana, but was originally from Saline, Michigan. Since he transferred to Indiana, he is considered the No. 1 prospect in the state and the No. 8 point guard from the Class of 2026, according to On3.

Jonathan Sanderson has a big family connection with Notre Dame

There is also another big reason why four-star point guard Jonathan Sanderson chose Notre Dame, as his father is Jon Sanderson, the strength and conditioning coach for the Fighting Irish. In choosing the school, the La Lumiere star will have the chance to play under his father.

The elder Sanderson is the only strength and conditioning coach in the NCAA righjt now to play and coach in the Final Four, being part of the 1999 Ohio State squad to make it to the Final Four, and was also a coach at Michigan in 2013 and 2018 when the Wolverines made it to the Final Four.

His son is now the first commitment Notre Dame has gotten from the Class of 2026.
